Description
Mid-Century Modern MP-091 3-seater sofa by Percival Lafer in original Brazilian Jacaranda Rosewood and upholstered in original leather. Brazil, 1960s
“The leather shows a beautifully aged patina, with natural wear consistent with time and use, as visible in the photos. The frame remains strong and stable, with all original straps intact. Recently restored and waxed, the wood boasts a striking grain and a rich, lustrous finish that highlights its craftsmanship.”
“Born in Brazil in 1936, Percival Lafer is a pioneering architect-turned-furniture designer celebrated for bringing high-quality modernist design to the masses. Often called mid-century modern’s “best kept secret,” Lafer made a lasting impact on Brazilian design, though he remains lesser-known internationally.
After graduating in architecture from Mackenzie Presbyterian University, Lafer took over his family’s furniture business and quickly shifted to furniture design. His breakout came in 1961 with the MP-1 armchair—an innovative, affordable piece that led to the founding of his company, Lafer MP (short for Móveis Patentados, or “Patented Furniture”).
Lafer was known for stylish, modular designs suited to mass production. Key pieces include the flat-pack MP-041 series (1965), the plexiglass-legged MP-89 (1970), and the iconic MP-163 “Earth Chair” (1976). His hallmark materials—exotic woods, quality leathers, and polished steel—brought a refined yet accessible appeal.
Despite a few missteps, like the Mini Sala, Lafer rebounded with hits such as the Mirage armchair (1967). By the 1980s, his designs were being exported globally, cementing his legacy in affordable modern design.”
